From mid-November through early March Baja's famous "El Norte" winds sweep the Sea of Cortez attracting kitesurfers from around the world with ideal conditions for all levels of ability. Our base of operations is at the Playa del Sol, though lessons are normally taught in the uncrowded waters at North Beach where certified instructors have your safety as their primary focus. You'll start on the wide beach with a trainer kite to give you a clear understanding of the power of the kite. After that, the body-drag lesson will introduce you to a larger kite with a focus on safety, depowering, launching and landing, relaunching, and safety release. Those skills are necessary for you to get a board on your feet, and ride!

Kitesurfing Lessons:

This season all Vela Kitesurf services will be provided in-house by NEW kiteschool located at the Hotel Playa del Sol! Our team of IKO certified instructors are eager to share knowledge about the sport they love. Instruction for all ability levels are available in 2-hour private lessons. If you have already booked time in advance please make sure to check-in at the Vela Baja center either at 09:00 the day of your first lesson or anytime the day before your lesson to reconfirm start-times.

LESSON PLANS AND RATES:

We understand that each student has their own unique and individual needs and goals. We will design each lesson so that the progression towards be a proficient kiteboarder is an exciting, safe, and enjoyable experience.

LAND TRAINING: 1 HOUR WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($75)

Have you ever watched kitesurfers ripping it up on the water, jumping huge, and riding waves and wondering if it is for you? We offer this unique lesson with a small trainer kite to give you a taste of how a kite flies.

BODY DRAG: 2 HOURS PER LESSON WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($150)

Practice body drags, one handed flying, power strokes, re-launch, and self-rescue, ALL IN THE WATER! Once you have gained some skill getting back upwind to a fixed point, you will be ready for board.

WATERSTART: 2 HOURS PER LESSON WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($150)

Using your gained skills, learn to put on the board in the water and get your first rides! By the end of this lesson, you will be 1 step closer to becoming a self-sufficient kitesurfer!

BEGINNER PACKAGE: 8 HOURS TOTAL WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($525)

This multiple day lesson will take you from your first flight to getting rides. We cater lessons to each individual's strength, ensuring we complete the lesson at the right pace for you. Kitesurfing is one of the fastest growing water sports in the word. The learning curve is is fairly quick in relation to other sports. Without proper instruction, kiteboarding can be dangerous, so we'll be sure to take each progression at a speed that is comfortable for both the student and instructor.

CONTINUING PACKAGE: 6 HOURS TOTAL WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($420)

Intended for students with some prior experience, a specialized one-on-one program that starts at your level. The goal of these lessons will be to get you up and riding with confidence so that you
can get out on the water on your own.

PRE-RENTAL LESSON: 2 HOURS PER LESSON WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($150)

Whether you are a current guest just completing our Beginner Package or a continuing student hoping for some extra help, this lesson is for you! Put all your skills to use and gain the confidence you'll need (and we'll require) before you can kite on your own with Vela rental gear. Your lesson will include all gear during your supervised training time. Note that your instructor may require that you take additional lessons prior to signing off and giving you full access to our rental fleet.

ADVANCED: 2 HOURS PER LESSON WITH ALL GEAR INCLUDED ($150)

Private personalized instruction to focus on anything you want to learn. Includes all gear during lesson.

Kitesurfing Downwinders

Experienced kiters can take advantage of a fantastic 2-hour assisted downwinders from North Beach, past the Playa del Sol and Palmas de Cortez (staying far outside the windsurfing area) and onwards towards the beachfront town of Buena Vista. Once there, margaritas are available at the hotel-bar where the trip ends. Includes use of equipment and transfer pick-up back to Los Barriles for $75 per person. A minimum of 2 people will be required for a downwinder to be scheduled, and can be booked in advance or on-site once you are there.

Kitesurfing Equipment

Vela Kitesurf is powered by the latest models by Cabrinha. Experienced kiters and students ready to take gear out on their own are welcome to get on the water with our fleet. Rentals will not be provided until proof of level-3 IKO certification (or similar) or completion of a 1-Hour Evaluation Course to demonstrate your skill level. There is a limited number of rentals spaces each day so make sure to plan ahead if you don't want to travel with your own gear.

EVALUATION: 1 HOUR TEST PERIOD ($50)

UNLESS YOU HAVE LEVEL-3 IKO CERTIFICATION A 1-HOUR EVALUATION COURSE IS REQUIRED BEFORE ACCESS TO KITE RENTALS CAN BE AUTHORIZED.

Bringing Your Own Gear?

We invite experienced kiters to join us on the water! Make sure to pack your booties as the launch zone can be rocky. Let our knowledgeable team help you get informed on the local conditions and restricted zones before you go out, and feel free to ask for help through beach assistance when launching / landing if you need it.
