El Yaque Beach on Margarita Island is one of the best spots to learn that we know of. With shallow water extending 200 yards out and steady side-shore winds, Margarita is the perfect place for windsurfers of all skill levels. The lighter morning breezes are just right for beginners, while the shallow water and steady afternoon winds make waterstart and jibe practice easy. Vela Margarita is known as the best instructional center on the beach with a stellar team of friendly and knowledgeable instructors specifically trained to help you reach your goals. Managers, Tom & Kathy Mastbaum, have been teaching windsurfing professionally for the past 16 years. Many say that Tom's clinics are the best, period. Lessons are available on a daily basis and are scheduled and paid for on-site.

Free Clinics

3 times per week we will conduct 30 minute Windsurf Technique Seminars. These are included in your vacation package whether you are on the complete package or the no equipment option. Check the bulletin board at the equipment area for seminar times (typically 10:30 AM).

If you seek additional instruction, we offer both private and group lessons by experienced, certified instructors as outlined above at an additional fee. All lessons are reserved, scheduled and paid for at the center preferably in U.S. Dollars or traveler checks. All instructors are highly trained, each with years of teaching experience.

Beginner Lessons

If you are pre-booked on our discounted beginner package, you will have use of our novice equipment and receive a beginner lesson that covers basic sailing skills. If you are not pre-booked on the discounted Beginner Program, you may purchase Beginner lessons on-site.

Group Lessons

Includes land-simulator and on-the-water instruction. The staff will help to coordinate groups of similar abilities. A group of 2-4 people is $45 per person for a 1-hour lesson, or $120 per person for a 3-hour package. When 4 people are in the class the time is extended.

Private Lessons

Individualized, private instruction that is catered to your specific needs, whether that may be jibing, stance, footstraps, jumping, etc. Times arranged on-site and are subject to instructor availability, though you will likley have no trouble signing up for as much time as you want to spend. Private lessons are $55 per hour. A package of three-one hour private lessons is $150.

Kids Lessons

We at Vela Margarita realize that children need special attention and need to be taught differently than adults so we have developed a kids program that teaches kids to windsurf with the main focus being FUN. Kids Special includes ½ hr. lesson including 1hr. equipment usage for $20. And remember: NEW at Vela Margarita KIDS SAIL FREE with one child 12 and under receiving free rentals for each paid renting adult.
