  Kitesurfing

Margarita is popular for kiting, but more and more kiters that travel there are realizing that the off-shore winds with glassy smooth water and slightly lighter winds of Coche island, just a 20 minute boat ride away, are much better suited for kiting.

We are now in the second season of our Dare2Fly kite center there. The conditions are absolutely perfect for learning. Off-shore winds create a very safe learning environment and continuous rescue boats make sure you stay close to the beach.

You can pre-book your lessons at Dare2Fly Coche through Vela reservations or you can schedule them upi Vela Margarita.

If you do prefer kiting in El Yaque, we can arrange for our instructor to meet you there.

We can arrange for kite rentals through Premium Kiteboarding, located at the very upwind corner of the beach. In order to rent kite gear, you must complete a beginner lesson package or have equal skills/competency. Clients who don't take lessons will be evaluated by an instructor.

Evaluation is part of the introduction of equipment and therefore free of charge. Clients who show a certification will also be evaluated. Currently, there is no official restriction or minimum skill requirement for clients to kitesurf in Margarita. As long as they abide by certain rules, use common sense and stay out of the windsurfing zone, clients can go out on their own in the kiting zone. Due to the strong winds, clients with little or no experience quickly realize on their own the importance of a professional lesson.

The beach is divided into 3 distinct zones:

  • Zone 1 -Upwind of the centers: No Time restrictions, open all day to kiting.
  • Zone 2 -The area in front of the centers and out to the platform: Kiting is allowed from sunrise until 9:30 am, no kiting until after 5:30 pm.
  • Zone 3 -Downwind of the centers: Riding is allowed at any time as long as you stay out of the lanes of windsurfing traffic. Please note this area is shallow over reef. Booties are recommended.

The Kite Zone (Zone 1) is located between Kite Beach and an imaginary line upwind of all the centers. A white buoy marks the beginning of this Zone. Kite Beach is located at the far upwind edge of this zone. Lessons are taught from Kite Beach from 9:30 - 5:30. Kiters can reach Kite Beach by kiting upwind aggressively or by taking the shuttle boat.

Kite beach, with its shallow training area, is located 1 mile to windward of El Yaque and can be easily reached by boat shuttle. On Kite beach, the center has a small office where personal items can be stored. Also, huts are offered to protect you from the sun and to provide a resting area. The ability to go upwind is not necessarily needed. Just take a ride on the shuttle boat to Kite beach; start there and ride the board down to El Yaque. It couldn't be easier. Additionally, kitesurfers can use the whole beach before 9.30 in the morning and after 5.30 in the afternoon. Lessons are taught in English, German and Spanish.
