Isla Margarita (Margarita Island) Venezuela is a mountainous tropical island paradise located off the north shore of Venezuela. Margarita is blessed with an average of over 320 days a year of sun, beautiful beaches with palm trees and a temperature that is never too hot or too cold.
Margarita Island about forty miles offshore from the mainland city Barcelona / Puerto la Cruz. It is west of Trinidad/Tobago and south of Grenada, 11 degrees north of the equator. This allows the island a very consistent temperature averaging 82 degrees. Typically arid, the island is semi-desert. Margarita's mountains range to 3000 feet (1000 meters). Scenery is great and the villages are quaint with many historical sites. The eastern part of the Island is called Macanao and is virtually undeveloped save for a few villages. One of the more popular tourist stops is the La Restinga Lagoon where you can take a boat ride through the mangroves.
Mountain bikes can be rented and guided tours are available with “No Wind No Cry”, they also rent scooters. They are located right behind the Vela center.
Other available activities include horseback riding, kayaking, golfing, island tours, trekking, hiking, bird watching and scuba and snorkeling trips are available.
Porlamar has great nightlife including casinos. The city is a duty-free zone, which makes for great shopping especially such high tax items as liquor and cigarettes. The language of Venezuela is Spanish however many people in the tourism related businesses speak some English or German.
Around El Yaque there are a number of the beach restaurant / bars that have music & dancing at night. If you want to venture out to Porlamar, which is about a 20 minute drive, you can find CASINOS, DISCOS, MOVIE THEATRES and many additional RESTAURANTS & CLUBS.
There is a new water park near Playa Parguito / Playa El Agua called Parque El Agua or Waterpark full of toboggan rides and other water related activities. Cost ranges from $14 - $20 per day with small children at half price. Diverland is located just outside Porlamar and has various rides including a Ferris wheel and roller coaster. They also have dolphins and seals and offer Dolphin shows as well as Dolphin Swim programs and a Seal Encounter.
There are also numerous tours available to Los Roques National Marine Park, Canaima (Angel Falls), Los Frailes (Islands off the north shore of the Island), jungle tours, round the island tours and many others. You can also spend the day with SCUBA, snorkeling, horseback riding, sail boat tours, catamaran drinking tours, hiking, bird watching, etc., etc.
